Joe Whelan is currently a sports anchor and reporter at WBMA-TV, the ABC affiliate in Birmingham, Alabama.

At WBMA, Joe serves as the station’s weekday correspondent covering both Alabama and Auburn, while anchoring their expanded college football coverage on the weekends. He also serves as a fill-in host on the station’s only nightly televised sports talk show.

Prior to joining WBMA, Joe spent two years as a sports anchor at both WANE-TV in Fort Wayne, Indiana and two years at KFYRV-TV in Bismarck, North Dakota. Joe also served as the radio play-by-play voice of the New Jersey Jackals in the Can-Am League for one season.

In his broadcast career Joe has been recognized by a variety of organizations for his work. The Associated Press and the Alabama Broadcaster’s Association have both named Joe Best Sports Anchor in Alabama. Additionally, he has been nominated for any Emmy award and honored by the Indiana Society of Professional Journalists for his reporting in Fort Wayne.

Joe graduated from the University of Maryland’s Phillip Merrill College of Journalism in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in Broadcast Journalism.
