Pete Thamel is a senior writer for Sports Illustrated, SI.com and Campus Rush, where he covers national college football and basketball. His duties range from breaking news to cover stories to investigative pieces.
Thamel previously covered national college sports for The New York Times for nine years and has reported stories everywhere from Maui to Istanbul to Beijing. In 2006, The New York Times nominated Thamel for a Pulitzer Prize for national reporting for his work uncovering diploma mills that were giving fast and easy grades to talented high school prospects. He won the Northeastern University Excellence in Sports Journalism award, which honors reporting that enhances understanding of sports in our culture. His work has twice been noted in The Best American Sportswriting. He’s received more 15 awards by the US Football and Basketball Writers Association for feature writing, game stories and enterprise work.
Thamel is a 1999 graduate of Syracuse University, where he served as sports editor of The Daily Orange for three years. He still considers it the best job he’s ever had. Syracuse’s Newhouse School honored him by inducting into its Professional Gallery for distinguished graduates in 2012. Thamel also covered college basketball for The Post-Standard in Syracuse and for ESPN. Thamel is on the board of PlayBall!, a Boston-based charity that funds sports at junior high schools in underprivileged areas of Boston.
